The Luxury Choquequirao Trek typically takes around 7 to 8 days, although variations of the itinerary are available. The trek begins in Cusco, where you’ll be driven to the trailhead at Cachora.

From there, you’ll start hiking towards Choquequirao, an impressive Inca citadel that is often referred to as the “sister city” of Machu Picchu.

The first section of the trek are descending into the Apurimac Canyon and crossing the Apurimac River. You’ll then ascend steeply through lush forests and terraced slopes, eventually reaching the archaeological site of Choquequirao.

This remote and relatively untouched site is known for its terraces, temples, and stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

After exploring Choquequirao, the trek continues along a challenging but rewarding route towards Yanama and then towards the renowned Salkantay Pass. The trail offers breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks, glacial lakes, and diverse ecosystems.

From the Salkantay Pass, the trek descends into the cloud forest, passing through picturesque villages and enjoying the rich biodiversity of the region. Eventually, you’ll reach the town of Aguas Calientes, located at the base of Machu Picchu.

Back to Cusco after the Luxury Choquequirao Trek 5 Days

On the final day, you’ll wake up early and take a bus up to the entrance of Machu Picchu. You’ll have a guided tour of the iconic Inca citadel, exploring its terraces, temples, and mysterious structures.

Afterward, you’ll have free time to further explore the site, hike Huayna Picchu (if you have a separate permit), or simply soak in the awe-inspiring atmosphere.

Itinerary

Day 1:

Cusco - Cachora - Chiquisca

In the morning, you’ll be picked up from your hotel in Cusco and driven to the town of Cachora, which is approximately a 4-hour drive.

Upon arrival in Cachora, you’ll meet your trekking team and begin the trek towards Choquequirao.
The first day involves a downhill hike to the Apurimac River, followed by a steep ascent to the campsite in Chiquisca.

Along the way, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of the Apurimac Canyon and the surrounding mountains.
You’ll spend the night at the Chiquisca campsite.

Day 2:

Chiquisca - Playa Rosalina - Santa Rosa

After breakfast, you’ll continue trekking along the Apurimac River, descending to the Playa Rosalina (Rosalina Beach).

From there, you’ll start ascending towards the Santa Rosa campsite, passing through tropical vegetation and crossing a suspension bridge.

The day involves a challenging uphill climb, but the rewarding views and natural beauty make it worthwhile.
You’ll spend the night at the Santa Rosa campsite.

Day 3:

Day 3: Santa Rosa - Choquequirao

Today is the highlight of the trek as you reach the archaeological site of Choquequirao.

The morning involves a steep uphill hike, gaining altitude and reaching the impressive terraces and buildings of Choquequirao.

You’ll have a guided tour of the archaeological site, exploring the temples, plazas, and terraces.
Afterward, you’ll have free time to further explore the site and take in the breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

In the afternoon, you’ll descend to the campsite near Choquequirao.

Day 4:

Choquequirao - Playa Rosalina - Cachora - Cusco

After breakfast, you’ll start the descent back to Playa Rosalina, crossing the Apurimac River.

From Playa Rosalina, you’ll continue uphill to reach Cachora, retracing your steps from the first day.

Once you reach Cachora, we drive back to Ollantaytambo to board a train from Ollantaytambo to the town of Aguas Calientes, the gateway to Machu Picchu.

Once you arrive in Aguas Calientes, you’ll check into your accommodation and have the evening to relax and prepare for your visit to Machu Picchu the next day.

Day 5:

Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu - Ollantaytambo - Cusco

Early in the morning, you’ll take a bus from Aguas Calientes to the entrance of Machu Picchu.

You’ll have a guided tour of the ancient Inca citadel, exploring its impressive temples, terraces, and other architectural wonders.

After the guided tour, you’ll have free time to explore Machu Picchu on your own, hike to the iconic viewpoint of Huayna Picchu (if you have a separate permit), or simply soak in the awe-inspiring atmosphere of this UNESCO World Heritage site.

In the afternoon, you’ll take a bus back to Aguas Calientes and board a train back to Ollantaytambo, From Ollantaytambo you’ll be transferred by Van back to Cusco.

What to Bring

The common misconception is that South America is always hot, however, due to the higher altitude of the Andes, the temperature can be quite chilly, especially during the night.

We suggest bringing either a duffel bag or backpack, whichever is more convenient for you to carry, and also a daypack of suitable size.
